...I'm not sure what was harder: Hearing the news, or having to tell [livejournal.com profile] murphymom. (I actually called her in the middle of class; I needed to know she'd heard it from family.)

The tears I feel today
I'll wait to shed tomorrow.
Though I'll not sleep this night
Nor find surcease from sorrow.
My eyes must keep their sight;
I dare not be tear-blinded.
I must be free to talk
Not choked with grief, clear-minded.
My mouth cannot betray
The anguish that I know.
Yes, I'll keep my tears till later:
But my grief will never go.

Sums it up quite nicely. I've been a fan of Anne McCaffrey for *years* and was sad to hear of her passing. Though at least I heard it from Fizzy and not a random article.

Anne... was a beacon, a light, a sanctuary, to me in my early and late teens. I devoured all she wrote, and it was like being held and warm when I read.... it was comfortable. And good. I am sad for her passing, and so happy that she gave what she did.

And I still read her words, it drops me into a good place.

Fred here: I had the privilege and pleasure to meet her a couple of times and I found her to be a gentle and kind person with a very wide practical streak. Once, at Conadian, we sat next to each other while having breakfast, each with our own groups. One of those "casual" encounters that one never forgets.

The first time I met her was at a bookstore on Castro St. In M.V. She was there for a book signing and I was there to get a book or two (or 3 or...) signed. There were about three people who came to get books signed so we got to sit around the table and just jabber for an hour. She, at that time, threatened to base a character on me, but I've never recognized myself in any of her later books.

That was back when I was still with Memorex, and I was wearing my badge, as I'd left work to pick you up - Anne looked at my badge and said, "I use your tapes." I still remember that -

Do it, sister. Sooner rather than later. Such treasures need preservation to remind us when our memories fail.

I know from bitter experience (not my memory, but MIL's). Never lose a treasure.

I think this was before Nerilka's Story, might have been Dragondrums. I was freshly in the SCA and had been, myself, to Ireland not too long before that, plus my music and theater experience, so it turned out that she and I had a lot in common to discuss. There was no extraneous color in her hair.

I thought of you the moment I heard this. She'll always hold a special place in my heart, as I know she does in yours.

I devoured the Dragonriders books as a young teen, all the way up until they revealed their sci-fi roots (and then I immediately lost my taste for the books). Still, my interest in the online text-based RPG that sprang up in AOL chat back in the day was what fueled my typing and writing and internet and technology interests... So I owe a lot to her, even if I outgrew Pern to some extent. She will undoubtedly be missed.
