Senator-Elect Kamala Harris asked her consituency for our priorities in the coming years. If you're a resident of California, you can fill out the survey here: http://www.kamalaharris.org/landing/e151209/

A friend shared his responses, and they were so well-thought-out I used them to frame my own.

As a member of a sexual minority, married to a disabled man, my first and most important priorities are as follows:

  1. Single-payer health care in this state, if not nationwide.
  2. Protections for the LGBTQ community in health care, housing, jobs, parental rights, and education.
  3. Protections for Muslims, Jews, and other religious minorities in freedom of worship and speech, housing, jobs, and education.
  4. Protections for all persons of color, regardless of immigration status, in freedom of speech and assembly, health care, housing, jobs, and education.

I realize this is a lot to ask for, particularly of a first-term senator. But if these issues aren't addressed, many people I love and care about - my husband, my family, my friends and colleagues - will be in grave danger.

"a lot to ask for," my butt! They're basic priorities, and we should absolutely be growling at our elected people to work on those things and chasing them out if they don't. The left has this habit of being conciliatory and making bargains and giving away ground (look where it's gotten us) while the right had that Tea Party thing where they absolutely did not give any ground and primaried out "weak" Rs who failed to meet their demands and, well, it got a bunch of reprehensible people where the Tea Party wanted them to be.

Anyway. Just pushing back on the "lot to ask for" thing - it absolutely isn't, and anyone who suggests it is and that we should push for less either don't have our interests at heart or have already given up.

I'm a fellow constituent and have already been bothering my state reps - haven't bugged K yet since she wasn't officially on board at the time.

*wild applause*

Wish I could join you.

I like our Democratic senator and representative here pretty well, but their big theme song is Bipartisanship with Not Extreme.

I came across this via Ashbet.

I voted for Harris because Boxer, who I greatly respect, endorsed her. But this thing seems to be a fundraiser - it goes from here to donation thing and it doesn't let you go past the donation page if you put $0 in.

I really don't like that. Maybe I've misunderstood and the message was sent and is actually going to Harris, but it looks like the message doesn't go through without $.

It's possible that I misinterpreted what I was seeing; I hope that is the case! I really hope that Harris is the ally of the downtrodden in the way Boxer was. She was my state's senator before I could vote, and I was very proud to be represented by her. (I actually met her when I was 13 or 14, because DC was a stop on our family vacation to the East Coast. I liked her in person, but it was really her record that impressed me, when I started to get political because I started to really understand that a great many people didn't have the same kind of childhood I had where of course the authority figures were the good guys and you could trust them.) Boxer seems to really get a lot of things that matter greatly to me, and care as deeply as I do. I can only hope that Harris is the same.
