Om nom OUCH.

So, thanks to an Invisible Internet Friend I got a referral code for a free week of Blue Apron meals. I made the first one of them yesterday...and while the food was AMAZING, it was a rather horrifying lesson in just how out of shape I am.

None of the steps in the recipe was all that difficult, but the fact that they were supposed to happen simultaneously meant there was no way for me to stop and let the pain reside before starting in on the next ingredient. [personal profile] gridlore was listening to me make my way around our really-not-that-big kitchen and almost stopped me in the middle of cooking. (Sadly, said kitchen size means that getting something like a lab stool on wheels so I can sit while I cook is most likely a non-starter.) We'll make at least one of the other two recipes before the ingredients go bad, but I've cancelled the account going forward.

(For the record, the recipe in question was their Lamb & Beef Stew. I am absolutely keeping the recipe card.)

A day like any other...

Back to work this morning, with the remainder of the meatballs from yesterday in the slow cooker in the office kitchen. I don't know how many of our drivers availed themselves of the opportunity when they got back today, but I feel better for knowing I did something. I still have very fond memories of my first T'giving as a SuperShuttle driver, where the admin staff had turkey with all the fixings waiting for us in the yard as we got back from the Hell On Earth known as SFO on Thanksgiving morning. (When you walk in the door to start your shift at 4am, and are immediately 30 minutes behind schedule? And stay that way until about 10am? Yeah, we EARNED that hot meal.)

Left the office around 2:30 (and was already the last one in the building when I did), came home and crashed HARD. (I don't remember sleeping that poorly last night...) I had unfortunately missed a text message from [personal profile] gridlore before I left work, asking me to stop for soda on my way home, so I went back out when I got up.

And promptly struck out on almost everything I went looking for at the store. :-P Starbucks is doing a weekend promotion for bonus reward points; the in-store location at Safeway was already closed when I got there. I went to Safeway instead of a store closer to home because I knew they have sold pre-made green bean casserole in holiday seasons past, and didn't really want to make a full batch if I'm the only one who eats it; couldn't find a single one. They didn't even have the larger size jars of Doug's favorite salsa when I went to pick that up.

Picked up take-out on the way home because my stomach informed me that if I ate another meatball today I would regret it. ;-)

...another Thanksgiving dinner that couldn't be beat...

Home from [personal profile] gridlore's mother's home, where we had dinner with his now-sister C, her wife L, and [tumblr.com profile] senshi76. I brought grape jelly meatballs for an appetizer, which everyone LOVED, and "Grape jelly?!" became an instant family meme.

C's toast at the beginning of the meal was perfect: "Here's to being the only family in the country tonight that doesn't have to worry about politics coming up over dinner!" As it happened, the only politics we talked about were the politics of Westeros (C&L are both waiting for the series to end before reading the books; Doug and I have read all of the books, but have only seen about half of the first season; my MIL is current on both).

Senshi and I had a fabulous conversation about various aspects of gender on the ride home (in addition to having a trans* parent, they are becoming more public about identifying as non-binary). Doug got the comment of the night, though, by noting "I'm not cisgender, I'm cislunar. I present as male and I'm about 240,000 miles out of it."

I have one more bag of meatballs to add to the sauce and toss back in the slow-cooker to take to work tomorrow. (Yes, I have to go back to work tomorrow. As I noted earlier in the month, babies don't stop pooping.) And we've got some tentative plans for Small Business Saturday. For now, though, I think it's time to queue up "Alice's Restaurant" (because I haven't been to Church yet this year!) and relax for the rest of the evening.

OPEN DINNER: Thursday, 17 October, Santa Monica, CA

As has been mentioned previously in these pages, [personal profile] gridlore and I will be at Conjecture the weekend of October 18-20; in the interest of breaking up the unrelenting drive to and fro, we will be staying with [livejournal.com profile] isomeme in Venice for one night at either end of the trip. And since it's been a bazillion years since I was down there with more than thirty seconds to call my own, I thought I'd invite some of my Invisible Internet Friends™ to get together for dinner.

After a bit of discussion and an extensive review of the various options available to us, Doug and I have settled on Rusty's Surf Ranch on the Santa Monica Pier as our venue. It's centrally located; Doug's never been to the Pier before; and I really liked the fact that they state on the menu how many ways they'll split a check at your table. (For the record: four.)

We're planning to be there around 6:30pm - late enough for the locals to at least have a fighting chance at getting there, without getting slammed with dinner rush. (I hope.) If anything slows us down en route, I'll be certain to post updates on Twitter and/or FB, so keep an eye out there for further developments.

I'd love to have a vague idea of how many people to tell the restaurant to prepare for, so drop me a line or leave a comment here if you think you can make it.

Hit a McDonald's drive-thru on the way home. Ordered McNuggets, with sweet-and-sour sauce.

We got home, I reached into the bag...

...and pulled out three packets of barbecue sauce.

Really? AGAIN?

I get to the office this morning...and Jack in the Box has put the wrong sandwich in my bag.

*HEADDESK*

Run out to the warehouse, inform my boss I am NOT doing this two days in a row, and drive back over.

To her credit (it pays to be a regular somewhere), the cashier started a fresh sandwich for me as soon as I pulled into the parking lot. (She'd actually tried to catch me before I left; I did remember hearing someone honking behind me, but I couldn't figure out why...) And when it was ready, she tossed a free dessert into the bag before sending me back on my way. Customer Service: you're doing it right.

Here's hoping that's all the wacky hijinks I'm due for today; I've got a movie to go to tonight...

Oorgh. :-/

Quiznos had a sign in their window as I walked up today, advertising a new prime rib & Hollandaise sandwich, which sounded FABULOUS, so I asked for a prime rib when I got to the counter.

I was unaware that in addition to this limited-edition sandwich, they regularly have a prime rib & chipotle sandwich on their menu.

You get one guess what was in my bag when I got back to the office.

Anyone who has eaten with me on a regular basis will know that I am not fond of what I call "non-consensually spicy" food. I ate it, 'cause it wasn't that hot, and I was hungry...and I shall now spend the rest of the afternoon contemplating my folly.

While looking at their menu to decide what I'm having for lunch today, I noticed that The Old Spaghetti Factory is offering gluten-free pasta. I've just sent off an email to discern which of their dishes now have GF alternatives; as I noted in that letter, I can certainly understand that making a tray of GF lasagna every day is probably not cost-effective in terms of both materials and labor, compared to the number of servings likely to be ordered in a given day.

Edit, 3/16/07 0959hrs: Here is the full text of the response I got to my email:

Good morning Kirsten,

Thank you for your email! Since our specialty is pasta and all of our regular pasta items have gluten in them, our Gluten-Free options are slightly limited. However, we are currently testing a Gluten Free Corn Rotelli in some of our units in (OR, WA and CA, except, Sacramento, Concord, Elk Grove, Roseville, Stockton and Rancho Cordova). We also have the following Gluten Free options available at all of our locations.

Main Courses:

* Baked Chicken. This is a chicken breast with the wing bone attached. It is marinated in oil and spices and baked in the oven. You can order this meal with the broccoli and or a side of Gluten Free pasta if it is available.
* Caesar Salad (with or without chicken) - ask for it without the croutons and without Caesar Dressing (substitute the Caesar Dressing for our Famous Creamy Pesto Dressing or our Balsamic Vinaigrette Dressing)

Sauces

* Tomato Sauce
* Mushroom Sauce

Side Dishes:

* Chicken strips. These are grilled chicken strips and have no breading. They are a great addition to the Caesar Salad or a pasta dish!

Creamy Pesto Ingredients

Mayonnaise, Salad Oil, Sweet Basil Leaves, Tabasco Sauce, Salt, Granulated Garlic, Grated Romano Cheese, Buttermilk, Half & Half

In an 8.5 gallon recipe there are 2 teaspoons of Tabasco Sauce. Tabasco has distilled vinegar in it, which can be unsafe to some Celiacs.

That? Rocked.

Just (well, not just, but close enough) home from an afternoon and evening in SF with [livejournal.com profile] gridlore, [livejournal.com profile] ataniell93, the Ambassador from Mongo (who doesn't have an LJ), and the here-on-business [livejournal.com profile] fusijui. Dinner was at The Slanted Door, with the suits picking up the bill (or as near as made no difference), and oh my god. My comment to Doug on the train home was "I loved being able to go somewhere we couldn't afford on our own, and order things you'd never eat." ;-)

Let's see. Half a dozen oysters and an order of yellowtail from the raw bar; the house spring rolls; two orders of shaken beef (the one thing we ordered that Doug would actually eat, hence the need for more); vegetarian glass noodles and cellophane noodles with Dungeness crab; crispy duck; summer squash with mushrooms...and dessert! There were seven options, and the Ambassador said "So let's figure out which two we don't like and get the rest!" We actually skipped three of them, and there wound up not being as much sharing as we initially intended, though Azalais and I did do a "prisoner exchange" (a spoonful of her creme brulee in exchange for a spoonful of my Guittard dark chocolate pot de creme).

Thank you all again for a wonderful evening that I would not have otherwise gotten to enjoy.

My local Girl Scout troops are finally carrying cookies I like again! (Yes, I'm a heathen who doesn't like Thin Mints. Deal.)

Thanks-A-Lots are a wonderful cookie by themselves - but something tells me they're going to be perfect "tea and a biscuit" cookies. I can't wait to get home and try.
