...along with proof that I have, in fact, "arrived" in Silicon Valley:

One of the folks I work with at Burning Man has started his own company, asked for my resume, and thinks I'd be a good fit.

It's not so much crunching data as crunchy-granola, but still. ;-)

More as it happens.

Hi, LJ. I swear I'm not dead. I'll turn this into a real post in the morning, okay? Cool. G'night.

Oh, right, it's morning now, isn't it?

Let's see. )

Resumes sent out )

Tomorrow, I head over to Kinko's to print out my resume on good paper, then FINALLY get off my ass and go to the agencies. (I emailed the person I thought was still my contact at OfficeTeam as soon as I was let go, but never got a response, so I don't know what happened there.)

It's still sinking in, really. The staff page is already updated, and I keep looking through it and trying to place everyone who's gone, now...the list includes two vice presidents, which is cold comfort, really. The CEO (I keep wanting to type "our CEO," and I think it's going to be a while before I manage to break that habit) told everyone at the staff meeting last week that seniority would not be a factor, and neither would "parentage" (which of the pre-merger orgs you had been employed by, assuming you went back that far), and that proved out. It's my intention to send him an email, thanking him - he told everyone from the beginning that he would never lie to us, that he would always come to the staff first with any news, good or bad, and he kept his word.

I'm waiting on a response from my erstwhile supervisor; I've asked her to track down a copy of the job description that I can use to update my resume (I got comfortable, and never added this job after I landed it). When she writes me back - which I'm hoping will be today - I'll ask about a letter of recommendation. Once the resume is updated, I'll start carpet-bombing Craigslist. I still need to reactivate my accounts with the various agencies, too. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that OfficeTeam will come through for me again; they're the ones who got me this job, after all.

Thanks, everyone, for your comments and good wishes. With so many other people going through the same thing right now, it's hard not to get down about my prospects, but I'll try.

So I haven't mentioned it yet, but I'm interviewing here on Thursday for the permanent position I'm currently filling as a temp. Combine that with Morgan coming up in someone else's journal, and, well, you can guess what comes next.

Am I ready for this interview? )

I'm still fried from the weekend, and I'm still debating with [livejournal.com profile] gridlore over whether or not a permanent job is completely vital as long as I'm clearing enough hours annually to still qualify for my insurance through the agency (he thinks the temp agency will be a strike against us on our credit, I'm not so sure)...and so far I'm not seeing anything today to meet my standards....

See? )
I sent out three resumes, but the crankypants are starting to pinch, so I'm not going to bother with links. EDIT - *snort* One of those three just bounced with a "retry timeout exceeded" error. Fuck it. Someone wanna buy my broke ass some ice cream?

Arrgh.

I'm running on about four hours' sleep. WHY my body decided to wake up before [livejournal.com profile] gridlore's alarm went off this morning, I can't tell you. But since I was taking my bum knee to Urgent Care today anyway, I gave up trying to go back to sleep, and grabbed a shower before I took him to work. Sat in the parking lot for an hour before they opened, spent an hour and change being attended to (doc confirms a strain, took films just to be sure). Came home, sat down at the computer long enough to check email before going back to bed...

...and got a phonecall for an interview at 1:30 today.

I don't know how I'm going to manage to be awake for this.

...I may be going to That Thing In The Deserttm after all....

You're all aware that I'm between gigs right now. I'm calling my agencies faithfully, sending out resumes almost hourly, doing the whole bit, but nothing's coming together just yet. And [livejournal.com profile] gridlore and I are both aware that if I don't have something keeping me occupied for Burn Week, I will be utterly insufferable here at home. *wry smile*

The shift sign-up for DMV went live last week, and [livejournal.com profile] wendor posted an update earlier today. So far, only about half of the shifts are covered...and the job I normally do is barely 10% filled (4 shifts out of 33 for the week). "Well, shit," says I on the department mailing list. "Anyone wanna feed me for a week and a half so I can come out and take care of that?"

Damned if I didn't get emails.

And then Doug tells me that if I can present him with an honest-to-$DEITY Plan on How This Will Work, he won't stand in the way of my going, because he knows how important it is to me.

So...um...yeah.

Anybody got room for my bike?

I tried last week to call the unemployment office to reactivate my claim; it doesn't expire until November, but as I was being paid at a higher rate on my latest temp assignment, I had questions I wanted to ask. I tried several times to get through to a human, and each time got a recorded message saying "Due to the number of callers already waiting to be helped, we cannot take your call at this time" before being unceremoniously dumped. So I sighed, shook my head, completed the online form and hoped that would be enough.

The phone system expressly said that Wednesday and Thursday are their slowest days, so I tried calling again today to check on the status of my claim - and got the same *&^%$#@! recording. I'll try again in an hour or so, to be sure I'm not just getting caught up in lunch at this point, and then I'll drive over to the nearest One-Stop office and start standing on desks, 'cause WTF, dude.

Well, I had an interview this morning - and then I finally got around to Googling World Financial Group. Thanks, I'll pass.

So instead, you get more of this. )

Feeling slightly less dead this evening - which is good, because OfficeTeam called me back around 5:30 and asked if I'd be able to go tomorrow to the client I was supposed to have interviewed with yesterday. So I haven't lost any face with them. Yay.

It should be an early night for me, as I'll need to drive [livejournal.com profile] gridlore to work in the morning - but if you know me at all, you know I won't manage it. *wry grin*

Bleh.

I. Feel. Like. Crap.

It can't be Con Crud, 'cause I wasn't there long enough...was I? I've only heard one other person I know was at FC complain of being ill, and I didn't see zir the entire time I was there. (Probably for the best, as I was to have been zir non-drinking buddy, and I wound up drinking...though certainly not as much as I did on Monday. o.O I'm still processing that, emotionally - while I don't think I was as drunk as [livejournal.com profile] elynne got, and I certainly wasn't as drunk as [livejournal.com profile] supersniffles, it was by far the drunkest I've been in several years, and I'm trying to decide how I feel about that.)

Nonetheless, I've had a sore throat since I went to bed last night, and today my head's been all stuffy (despite taking cold-and-sinus meds for it). It was bad enough that I had to cancel out of an interview for another temp assignment, and then skip both Starport and [livejournal.com profile] sunset_and_port, which really didn't make me happy. So I'm mainlining hot tea, and doing my best to stay warm (a good trick in this apartment). In the meantime, if anyone I've spent time with in the last 96 hours or so starts feeling poorly, I apologize.

I was supposed to train for a new temp assignment today. I was less than thrilled with the assignment, because it was a 25% paycut from the work I've been doing, and I wasn't being guaranteed more than three days a week, but it was for Cirque du Soleil, and the client was exciting enough to me that I took the gig despite these things.

And then I looked into how I was getting home.

I was scheduled to get off work at 8:30. The closest bus to the worksite (the 66, three blocks away along a street that's a freeway offramp) leaves that stop at 8:47, and would deposit me at my transfer point at 8:54. My connection, the 64 around the corner, would arrive at 9:24 and drop me at home at 9:57. If for any reason I was kept late, the next 66 comes along at 9:17 and gets to the transfer point just as the 64 is pulling away.

The next 64 (and the last one of the night) doesn't come for another HOUR.

I was supposed to be working as a box-office cashier. Those of you who have worked cashiering gigs before know what that means - you stay until your till is balanced at the end of the night.

Like HELL was I going to run the risk of having to spend an hour standing at 1st and Santa Clara in downtown San Jose for a lousy $9.25.

So I called this morning to cancel. Which, of course, now puts me in the awkward position of having to check [ ] Yes when I fill out my unemployment form for the week and it asks me "Did you refuse any work?" (I have my Personalized Job Search Assistance Session with EDD tomorrow, and I'll be asking about this in detail, to be sure.) Now I get to come up with a well-worded letter to Manpower Corporate, asking them why the fuck they can't offer me what I'm worth when they've got all of my MOUS certificates, and test results in their own system to back those up.

After I send out some more resumes.
