A day like any other...

Back to work this morning, with the remainder of the meatballs from yesterday in the slow cooker in the office kitchen. I don't know how many of our drivers availed themselves of the opportunity when they got back today, but I feel better for knowing I did something. I still have very fond memories of my first T'giving as a SuperShuttle driver, where the admin staff had turkey with all the fixings waiting for us in the yard as we got back from the Hell On Earth known as SFO on Thanksgiving morning. (When you walk in the door to start your shift at 4am, and are immediately 30 minutes behind schedule? And stay that way until about 10am? Yeah, we EARNED that hot meal.)

Left the office around 2:30 (and was already the last one in the building when I did), came home and crashed HARD. (I don't remember sleeping that poorly last night...) I had unfortunately missed a text message from [personal profile] gridlore before I left work, asking me to stop for soda on my way home, so I went back out when I got up.

And promptly struck out on almost everything I went looking for at the store. :-P Starbucks is doing a weekend promotion for bonus reward points; the in-store location at Safeway was already closed when I got there. I went to Safeway instead of a store closer to home because I knew they have sold pre-made green bean casserole in holiday seasons past, and didn't really want to make a full batch if I'm the only one who eats it; couldn't find a single one. They didn't even have the larger size jars of Doug's favorite salsa when I went to pick that up.

Picked up take-out on the way home because my stomach informed me that if I ate another meatball today I would regret it. ;-)

At least I'm never bored, I suppose.

But still, I'd prefer it if the last 16 hours of my life weren't so readily summed up by this icon.

For the record, everyone and everything is fine now. (The accuracy of this statement is subject to change without notice.)

...yeah, no, I haven't been posting much.

So there was this game I was playing, and the end of it SUCKED, and every time I start thinking about it I get riled again, so I don't want to talk about it.

And there was this con I went to, and while there were some really AWESOME moments, the frustrating and/or depressing ones seem to have outweighed them, so I don't really want to talk about that, either.

And then one of my oldest friends (and one of my first boyfriends) took his own life this weekend, and I don't even KNOW what to say about that.

Try me again in a couple of weeks.

I apparently didn't say this loudly enough last time.

The next person to make a Star Wars Day reference about my wedding anniversary is getting shoved out the airlock.

[personal profile] gridlore and I were married May 4, 1991, because it was the Saturday closest to the one-year anniversary of our roadtrip to see the Dead, and his proposal on the trip home. For all that we met through our mutual interest in science fiction, that interest had NOTHING to do with our wedding plans.

(Besides, if we'd wanted a fannishly-significant wedding, we would have chosen November 22nd, he would have been dressed like Jon Pertwee, and I would have worn Romana's scarf from "Destiny of the Daleks" in lieu of a veil.)

As you were.

A step in the right direction....

[livejournal.com profile] gridlore just called; [livejournal.com profile] baka49er has arrived at Offhand Manor, and the front door did not have a "Sorry We Missed You" notice on it. Fingers crossed that they'll get there in a reasonable amount of time and actually, y'know, FIX the problem.

Merry Christmas!

[livejournal.com profile] gridlore and I are home, taking a break in the midst of the day's celebration. We did breakfast at [livejournal.com profile] baka49er's this morning, with [livejournal.com profile] isomeme, [livejournal.com profile] laurellady, [livejournal.com profile] madelineusher, and the Steeles (none of whom are on LJ), with presents afterward; the Steeles will be with his family tonight for dinner, and Doug and I will return for roast beast with the SoCal contingent.

The Loot List, in some semblance of order )

I have a couple of care packages I'm going to get in the mail tomorrow Or Else. I ran out of stamps and spoons at about the same time this year; I managed to get one batch of cards in the mail yesterday, but not everyone I wanted to send a card to is getting one, alas. (Including some people who sent cards to me, for which I apologize profusely.) All in all, it's been a wonderful holiday.

Yes, I know plenty of people on both sides of whether or not Perms are a worthwhile investment in light of Strikethrough. I still use my journal regularly enough to consider it one.

Calling in dead

Woke up an hour before my alarm was supposed to go off this morning. Started to cough. Didn't stop for 45 minutes. Evil, horrid, generally "productive" cough; I sounded like the sea lions at Pier 39. (Though I do think most of them are still heavier than me. :-P) And Mother Nature's Pregnancy Test is due back today or tomorrow, so I'm a real piece of work. Called/emailed my supervisor and agency rep and told them it just wasn't happening today.

Just talked to [livejournal.com profile] gridlore; he says to start braiding bedsheets, 'cause he's ready to blow the joint. (There was a complete failure to read his chart last night at shift change; despite giving him a sleeping pill and a note saying not to disturb him between 2300-0600, they woke him up TWICE.) If he ever actually sees his doctor today, he's going to ask if there's any reason they can't finish the infusions on an outpatient basis - and if there is, if they'll at least let him take a friggin' SHOWER, 'cause he's starting to feel like the main reason his head still hurts is because his hair's so damn dirty. (Which was oddly reassuring to hear; I know I start getting headachy if I haven't washed my hair in too long, but wondered if it wasn't just a psychosomatic thing.)

My throat and my abs hurt from this morning's unexpected workout. I've gotten outside most of a pot of tea; I'm gonna go back to bed for an hour or two, check back in with Himself, then run a couple of errands that will go over better with face-to-face interaction.

Here we go again.

(crossposted to [livejournal.com profile] kshandra and [livejournal.com profile] gridlore)

At roughly 5:30pm on Sunday, March 4th, Doug was admitted to Kaiser Santa Teresa with complications of acute sinusitis.

Asplenetic patients such as Doug are at increased risk of infection from encapsulated bacteria such as pneumococcus and meningococcus. In addition to receiving booster vaccines against both of those, he will be undergoing a course of intravenous antibiotics and a probable head/neck CT scan to determine the scope and extent of the infection currently on display around his right eye. Treatment is supposed to last two or three days.

Doug is still feeling pain in the superorbital sinus cavity, though the Augmentin he's been taking since Thursday night does appear to be having a positive effect on that, as the pain is no longer as pronounced when the Vicodin wears off (though an earlier attempt to reduce the V. dose was premature). The fact that he's feeling pain around the eye, as opposed to within it, is a good sign according to the doctors.

I am, as one might expect, completely out of spoons at this point (hence the timestamp on this post; I collapsed when I got home from the hospital, after an only partially-successful attempt to eat something for the first time in nine hours). I have to be up at 0530 to call Doug's boss and give him the lovely news that no, he really IS sick and won't be coming in to work for at least a week. From there, it's likely a trip to the laundromat down the street, as Doug and I both need clean clothes (I have to bring him the lounge pants he got for $WINTERHOLIDAY, as Kaiser apparently doesn't keep pajama bottoms in stock, and wearing just a gown depresses him), and then I get to figure out whether or not I can actually manage going to work - my boss at my current temp gig has been incredibly understanding this past week, but they do need me to be there, and with Doug out of the picture for at least a week, we really need my income. And I'm trying to balance all of this against the fact that I'm still sick, and as you can probably figure out, it's not going too well. :-P

I'm leaving comments enabled on both of these posts, but I'm disabling email copies as an exercise in spoon conservation; take it as read that your good wishes, positive energy, etc., are welcome and appreciated. As I noted above, Doug is only supposed to be in hospital for a couple of days; if that should change, I will post a locked update to both journals with room numbers, visiting hours, and all that jazz.

Taking a cosmic mulligan

Woke up with the alarm today at 0600...and immediately began wishing for a trepanning drill. Blindly found my way into clothing, took [livejournal.com profile] gridlore to work, advised him I would be using the credit card to get breakfast in the hopes that hot food would help. Advil Cold & Sinus and two acetaminophen around 0700 took a little of the edge off; a second AC&S at 0830 got me to where I no longer actively hurt, but was still very aware of the fact that I had a brain and sinus passages. Finally threw in the towel at 1000 and left work, asking the office to wish me luck (I remembered last spring's two-day nightmare all too well). Slept from 1100 to 1700, when Doug got home, and was feeling moderately human. Had a cup-o-saltnoodle for dinner and curled back up in bed with that and my latest book. Now I'm having more "tea, damnit" and feeling the pressure building up behind my right eye again; I'll take another AC&S before I go back to sleep.

*blink*

...I may be going to That Thing In The Deserttm after all....

You're all aware that I'm between gigs right now. I'm calling my agencies faithfully, sending out resumes almost hourly, doing the whole bit, but nothing's coming together just yet. And [livejournal.com profile] gridlore and I are both aware that if I don't have something keeping me occupied for Burn Week, I will be utterly insufferable here at home. *wry smile*

The shift sign-up for DMV went live last week, and [livejournal.com profile] wendor posted an update earlier today. So far, only about half of the shifts are covered...and the job I normally do is barely 10% filled (4 shifts out of 33 for the week). "Well, shit," says I on the department mailing list. "Anyone wanna feed me for a week and a half so I can come out and take care of that?"

Damned if I didn't get emails.

And then Doug tells me that if I can present him with an honest-to-$DEITY Plan on How This Will Work, he won't stand in the way of my going, because he knows how important it is to me.

So...um...yeah.

Anybody got room for my bike?

Okay, I'm gonna grin like a fiend all day, now.

I know I've gone on here before about how [livejournal.com profile] gridlore's cousin used to be married to Tommy Shaw. The first Damn Yankees album came out shortly after we got together; we saw the band twice when they toured with Bad Company that year, and "High Enough" was Our Song.

Completely by chance, 10@10 today was from 1991.

Tomorrow's our anniversary.

Dave played "High Enough."

out-of-spoon error; reset

[livejournal.com profile] gridlore called me around 3:30, asking if there was a chance of me ducking out of work early and picking him up; after an earlier phonecall from him saying he'd had one customer turn into both a [livejournal.com profile] customers_suck and a [livejournal.com profile] mock_the_stupid post, I figured he could use a break. I'd had an invitation from [livejournal.com profile] jennconspiracy (thanks again!) to come up to her place in the evening to hang out for a while, but after I collected Doug, he asked if we could stop by Costco for a few things, and that pretty much bled me dry. I went to ostensibly take a "nap" around 6:30...woke up briefly at 10:30 when Doug came to bed...and finally got up about half an hour ago, after 45 minutes of lying in bed wondering if I was going to fall back asleep.

I guess I needed it.

Up I hic.... (I wanted to be an English teacher.)

Got the hiccups while I was driving [livejournal.com profile] gridlore to work this morning. It's never a good time to have the hiccups, but while behind the wheel is particularly suboptimal. The following conversation ensued:

"President Pat Robertson."

*laughter* *hiccup*

"New lead singer of Queen, Michael Jackson."

*more laughter* breathlessly "Don't make me laugh so hard when I'm driving, my eyes close!"

"Just trying to scare the hiccups away...."

Fortunately, they stopped fairly soon after that. I shudder to think what he would've come up with next!

Happy $WINTERHOLIDAY!

[livejournal.com profile] gridlore and I have been offline for the last 24 hours (best guess is that something disabled our ethernet card when he was trying to install his new software), so I haven't had the chance to enumerate the fabulous gifts I've gotten, the wonderful times we had with both families, or the rockin' time I had at karaoke (and breakfast thereafter).

I have read everything y'all have posted in that time (?skip=150 on a filter that doesn't include communities or RSS feeds), and tried to comment as I could. I've seen a lot of goodness in those entries, for which I am grateful, and thank you for sharing...and a lot of sadness, for which I am sorry, and hope that you all find comfort.

I will update again eventually, but not just yet, as it is now 5pm and I have yet to have breakfast today.... (That's not as horrendous as it might be, as I didn't get up until 1:30p after getting home at 4:30a, but, still, Purple Koosh needs food - badly.)

It finally happened....

I make no attempt to hide the fact that I prefer the men in my life clean-shaven. Doug and I have gone 'round and 'round about this as long as we've been together; until he got sick, he looked extremely young without facial hair, so he preferred to keep at least a mustache, if not a full beard. The goatee was a compromise that I eventually came to like.

So I've been tearing through bags of photos tonight, trying wildly to find the disk from the photos I took on my trip to San Luis Obispo with dafydd in January, or at least the photos themselves.... In my ramblings, I came across a picture of Doug & me that's at least five years old.

He was clean-shaven in it.

He looked terrible.

Congratulations, dear, you've corrupted me utterly. ;-)
