[personal profile] murphymom and I went to the Fathom Events screening of The Nutcracker as performed by the Bolshoi Ballet, originally recorded in 2014.

I was surprisingly underwhelmed. )
I will say it wasn't all a letdown. I appreciated the fact that the Nutcracker doll was performed by a different, younger dancer, to make the transformation into the Prince all the more dramatic. I loved the behind-the-scenes footage we got before each act, with the dancers wearing leggings, down vests, etc., to keep their muscles warm before going on (including one person who I swear I saw wearing a Pikachu onesie). And getting to see the building itself was a treat.

In all, it was a good way to spend time with my mother for her birthday...but I think next year I may look for a local live production that doesn't cost the earth.

Whee!

Got home from New Wave Prom about half an hour ago. Had a lovely time dancing with [livejournal.com profile] iceblink, [livejournal.com profile] hopeforyou and [livejournal.com profile] supersniffles and visiting with [livejournal.com profile] spiderdust after she arrived. We all spent some time talking about the possibility of planning a bi night at the club like the one [livejournal.com profile] insomnia helped arrange there several years ago, throwing around names, etc.

I'm still a little surprised that I was there for two hours and didn't hear a single Duran Duran song, but I did get the DJ to follow Pet Shop Boys' "Opportunities" with ABC's "(How to be a) Zillionaire," so I certainly wasn't disappointed in the music by any stretch of the imagination. And I got petted by a pretty bellydancer. Yay.

The Evolution of Dance

I had to fight to keep myself from applauding.

Domba! are the troupe that [livejournal.com profile] medancer performed with when she was living in Arizona; lots of equal-opportunity eyecandy between the dancers and the musicians. If you've got that evening free, I highly recommend their performance.

Just a quick note while I'm still at Baycon....

I found a black velvet skirt in the dealers' room yesterday - and it FIT! *poing* I've also ordered a custom skirt from the same people; I purchased a shawl from them last year and I wanted to get something to match. I'm probably going to wear the black skirt to the dance tonight. (Not that going to the dance is probably the wisest thing I could do, considering just how much time I've spent on my feet this weekend - but damnit, it's music!)

Last night's party kicked serious ass, too. I'll try and post in more detail when I get home, and have caught up on my sleep. (I'm really glad I have next week off....)
