[tumblr.com profile] myrkrida, thank you for letting us dream with you.

Okay, not all the things, but a hell of a lot of them.

I am taking Friday off from work; we have the conference with the treatment team in the morning, and then I am devoting the rest of the day to prepping the bedroom for furniture moving. (If anyone local would like to "adopt" a bag of laundry, there's going to be a lot of it...)

SATURDAY, AUGUST 17 at 1:00pm, I am looking for as many people as possible to help me rearrange the bedroom furniture. A couple of people have sponsored pizza to go along with the beer, so I can feed whoever shows up.

In the room are the following:
  • A queen size bed w/headboard
  • Two matching nightstands
  • A matching 6-drawer bureau w/attached mirror
  • A 3x3 shelving unit, roughly waist-high
  • A small bookshelf, smaller than the shelving unit

Currently, if you are standing in the bedroom door, you are looking at the foot of the bed; [personal profile] gridlore's side of the bed (and the bureau) are to your right, with very little maneuvering space between them. I want to swap the bureau and the bed, so Doug's side of the bed is closest to the door with no obstructions.

If you can make it to Santa Clara on Saturday afternoon and haul things around, please contact me privately for the address.

And thank you.

Furniture moving will happen THIS SATURDAY. Details to follow when I get home tonight.
kshandra: (Wedding)
Today was full all around, as [personal profile] gridlore began intensive rehab and I went to my first full day at work since all this began a week ago. (Has it been a week already? Has it only been a week?) I am quite honestly at the point where I don't know where to begin with these posts, so have a series of bullet points.

  • First, a word about shop safety VA benefits. Unless and until the Restore Honor to Service Members Act passes, Douglas sadly does not qualify. (Yes, I know this is does not match what some of you were originally told about the end of his military career. The topic is not open for discussion at this time.)
  • We have a conference with his treatment team Monday morning at 0830. Hopefully, he will have spent enough time with the various therapists by that point that they'll be able to discuss possible time frames with us.
  • We also have an appointment Thursday afternoon at PAMF with a volunteer from HICAP. This appointment was made long ago; I'm going to ask at the conference on Monday if it's possible to schedule an appointment at Mission Oaks, since I'm doubtful Doug will be ready for an excursion at that point (assuming such was even possible).
  • Local folks who have been asking how they can help? Here's your chance. I need several able-bodied people who can come over THIS WEEKEND to help me reorganize the furniture in the bedroom; our bed and dresser need to switch places so we can put Doug's side of the bed closest to the door. (I realize this is ridiculously short notice, but if I tried to schedule this for next weekend, with my luck they'd send him home on Friday.) Drop me a line privately and once I have a sense of when the most people are available, I'll get back to y'all with a day and time. Sadly, all I can offer in terms of compensation is the beer I was supposed to be taking to Burning Man with me; hope you like Pabst Blue Ribbon.
  • I'm sure I have plenty more to add that is both relevant and true, but I don't have the spoons to put it together in a coherent fashion. Have a picture of Doug with a therapy dog instead.

...unlike my husband, I will be in attendance at Convolution this weekend. I don't know how much of the con I'll be at, as finances have dictated that I must commute up to the hotel from the Mysterious South; should anyone be in a position to offer, I will try and have a bag packed in the car, and will not say no to crash space.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how the con has come together.

Tuesday morning on Twitter, Giants fans were greeted with the following:

...I went a little crazy.

Right. The slideshow from the Photobucket beta didn't work; several large graphics behind the cut. Worksafe, but roll for SAN loss. )

Sadly, the tickets were not to be mine, but my hat is off to the winner, whose entry was truly inspired. (I saw his entry come up as I was tracking the #RomoBomb tag, and I immediately texted [personal profile] gridlore, "If I have to lose this thing, it better be to that.")

Condolences to the family and friends of Dennis Netto, a.k.a DENNIS ERECTUS of KOME/San Jose from its "Come Radio" heyday of the 1980s. Don West shares, "Dennis was an original and talented shock jock who pre-dated the notoriety of Howard Stern. Dennis worked briefly in Texas, but San Jose was his home. Even long after he left the station and KOME closed, selling its frequency to KUFX, people in the area still talk of him, and remember his remarkable style."

I appear to be in possession of a 4-day BayCon guest-of-guest membership. I'm working Friday and Monday, and I'm not staying on-site (obviously), but I'll do my best to make the most of the time I'm there.

Tomorrow, I'll stop by ProgOps after work (hopefully they'll be open) to pick up my badge and see if I can learn who my mysterious benefactor is. (I have a couple of theories, but as [livejournal.com profile] karlht suggested I may be "pleasantly surprised," said theories could turn out to have very little basis in fact.)

Do any of my local geeky friends have a hard drive dock? I still have both HDs from my old desktop system, and I'd like to see if any of the data can be salvaged (most specifically, my MP3s are all on one of them) before they get tossed.

Failing that, can one (or more) of you tell me if this is a worthwhile investment?

Crossposted early, often, and thoroughly

Convolution 2012 has an opportunity to volunteer our time wrapping gifts, with all of our tips going to our charity, Reading for the Future.  This gets our name out there and a jump start on helping our charity.

Where: Barnes & Noble - 1150 El Camino Real, Space 277, San Bruno, CA 94066, 650-871-2530
When: November 25, 2011 (Black Friday), 6:00am-10:00pm

We appreciate all the help we can get - you don't have to be staff to join the fun! We do not need to provide paper or supplies, and this is a job that can be done sitting down. Shifts will start every two hours between 6:00am and 8:00pm; we need between 2-4 people for each shift. People who show up ON TIME for the 6:00am shift will be treated to their choice of beverage and breakfast item from the B&N Cafe.

Please email our Chairman, Jim "Sylvan" Sullivan, with the times you are available to help. And if you're not available, please repost! We'd love to get this out to as many people as possible.

[personal profile] digitalsidhe posted earlier this evening about attending the memorial for Jack Random yesterday, and it appears to have stirred up a lot of emotions in me. Not because I knew Jack - indeed, I'm not sure I'd ever heard his name before my queer friends started posting about his passing.

And that's what did it. I'm upset about my complete inactivity in "freak" circles. Queer, kinky, poly...you name it, I'm a cipher in it. And it isn't about the sex (mostly, anyway, though I'd be lying if I said that part didn't bother me, too) - it's about the connection. The community (and half of my Burner friends are shouting "DRINK!" now). Yes, I have my Invisible Internet Friends, and I love you all, but I don't have anyone who will call me up and say "Hey, wanna go to $EVENT next week/month/whenever?"

I know, I know. If I did, 90% of the time the answer would would be "Sorry, can't afford it." But I'd like the opportunity to be disappointed that I won't get to do something, as opposed to being disappointed that I didn't even know the something existed until someone Tweets about it from the audience (which happened over the weekend).

And no, the answer isn't "So go do something on your own!" Especially not right now, when the introversion is spiraling into tighter and tighter circles.

All comments screened, and I make no guarantees that I'll be able to answer them in a timely fashion, if at all. Also, virtual hugs are going to rub me the wrong way - a symptom of the problem, if you will - so please, don't.

The following is not filtered, because I don't know how many of you may be within striking distance of the Santa Clara Hyatt this weekend for whatever reason.

I was more than a little intrigued by the following item on the program listing for BayCon, scheduled for Monday at 10am:

Artistic Solutions Board Meeting - Alameda
Open board meeting with the Artistic Solutions board of directors.
Jay Reynolds Freeman, Mike Higashi, Michael Siladi (M), Robert Toland, Caradwen von Braskat

A lack of this sort of transparency is precisely why all of us walked away last year. So please, I ask you, if you are within a reasonable distance of the hotel and have the time on Monday morning, come to this meeting. The entire ASI board needs to understand beyond a shadow of a doubt that this is bigger than the seventeen of us who left last January.

All comments screened, and please understand it may take me a while to respond, if at all.

...if I were to suddenly appear at Wondercon this weekend, might one of you wonderful people take pity on me and let me crash on your floor Saturday night?

I have friends who will be in the Masquerade, and after last year, the notion of going to a convention where I have NO emotional ties to the event or its staff is really appealing.

In no particular order:

  • Starting to feel like I might actually be competent as an assistant department head. (Starting. Nothing more. And I'm still not interested in taking the next step.)
  • The sight of [livejournal.com profile] firestrike in a tuxedo taking my very breath away...and being further overwhelmed by the thought of someone so beautiful sharing his life with me.
  • Encountering someone I wasn't sure I was ready to see (and even less certain of zir readiness to see me) and having it go remarkably well. (Zie's still smoking fuckin' hot, though. And who knew zie could sing like that?!)
  • Speaking of singing...the phenomenal success that was Friday night, and feeling ever so slightly smug that getting [livejournal.com profile] kor27 to work the con was originally my idea.
  • The "spoon conservation device," as [livejournal.com profile] zyxwvut dubbed my scooter Friday night on the party floor.
  • Giggling furiously as I rolled down the plastic-covered carpet, thinking of bubble wrap.
  • Seeing my friends doing awesome work in the Masquerade, and being rewarded - repeatedly - for their efforts.
  • Time with loved ones. Not enough of it - never enough of it - but precious nonetheless.
  • The best Emergency Holographic Boyfriend EVAR. (I can't wait to see Dr. Doyle's pictures of those two together....)
  • Weasel Tags.
  • "It was drunk, I was dark...."
  • The splendid dichotomy of sitting in a room full of catty commentary that would leave the Algonquin Round Table in the dust...and feeling cherished and accepted.
  • "...a joint that's merry."
  • Finding out that the ribbons [livejournal.com profile] gridlore and I had ordered this year had been specifically mentioned in the Ribbonology panel on Friday, resulting in their singularly absurd popularity. (Warning me would've been nice, [livejournal.com profile] pentaclemoon. *grin*)
  • Flirting with eye candy.
  • Acquaintances becoming friends. Bonding over the weirdest things.

Looking forward to the staff BBQ in three weeks.

...not André (and not Andrae, either, though there is a Red Lobster around the corner...), but Buggy!

As some of you already know, [livejournal.com profile] eleri is coming down to the SF Bay Area for a seminar next month, and she'd love to see as many of you as possible while she's here. So we've made plans for a get-together, and hope you can make it.

When: Thursday, May 14th, 6-9pm
Where: Fresh Choice, 5353 Almaden Expy #39A, San Jose, CA 95118 - (408) 723-7991
Who: [livejournal.com profile] eleri. [livejournal.com profile] kshandra. [livejournal.com profile] gridlore, assuming he hasn't fallen asleep already. You. And you. And yes, you, even though you've never met her before.
Why: Because Everyone Loves Eleri. It's not just a good idea...it's the law.

I'm going to the 11:35 showing of Fanboys at the AMC Mercado 20 tomorrow morning. I'm about to be offline for the rest of the evening (I'm a dutiful daughter who's loaning [livejournal.com profile] murphymom her laptop power cord for a class o.O), so I can't do anything towards coordinating this. Text or Twitter DM me if you think you can make it.
kshandra: A spoof of the Guitar Hero logo, featuring a home karaoke machine (Karaoke Hero)
([livejournal.com profile] blueashke, this one's for you, especially....)

For those of you who have been ogling [livejournal.com profile] kor27's song list, but think Mountain View is MUCH too far south to come on a weeknight, here's your chance. Starting tomorrow, our beloved Bruce will be doing that voodoo that he do so well at Julie's Supper Club II on Folsom. (Of course, SF is even harder for ME to get to on a weeknight, so you're unlikely to see me before Thanksgiving Eve, but please, if you're in the City on a Wednesday and looking for some good clean* fun, stop on by.)

* Well, until Bruce decides it's time to sing "Ballad Of Chasey Lain" again....

Edit: ...but he is.

Dave, you are Bay Area Radio to me. I'm glad you'll still be doing 10@10, but it won't be the same.
kshandra: The Burning Man effigy, lit in blue neon, arms by his sides; an orange half-moon is visible over his shoulder. (Clefs)
...but before I go, I'm going to see Bill Kirchen at the Freight and Salvage on the 29th. Who's with me?
