kshandra: Porcelain figurine of a dragon embracing a smaller dragon; the smaller one is pointing to the larger one's heart (YouTouchMyHeart)
There's a (not-quite) full tank of gas in the truck, some extra groceries in the fridge, and enough money in the PayPal account that I can get cash back off a small purchase tomorrow and get the checking account out of the red before I get dinged for their "Extended Overdraft Fee" or whatever the hell they called it. Once that's done, I should still have enough left that I can finally put in the 2014 Upgrade disk I got from Quicken and start following my money more closely again, and then renew my membership at the therapy pool after the 15th (when it becomes $30 rather than $50).

I was able to go visit [livejournal.com profile] pentaclemoon last night for her birthday and stay up far too late chatting (okay, snarking) with her, [livejournal.com profile] cruz531, [tumblr.com profile] myrkrida, [livejournal.com profile] thesylvan, and [twitter.com profile] KobaltBleu, and spent the drive there and back working my way through the WTNV archive (I've just finished "A Story About You"). I paid for my late night by spending the day dead for tax purposes; I finally got out of bed for good about an hour ago, and am now making clean-out-the-fridge sourdough bread pizzas for breakfast/lunch/dinner/whathaveyou.

[tumblr.com profile] myrkrida, thank you for letting us dream with you.

As has been mentioned previously in these pages, [personal profile] gridlore and I will be at Conjecture the weekend of October 18-20; in the interest of breaking up the unrelenting drive to and fro, we will be staying with [livejournal.com profile] isomeme in Venice for one night at either end of the trip. And since it's been a bazillion years since I was down there with more than thirty seconds to call my own, I thought I'd invite some of my Invisible Internet Friends™ to get together for dinner.

After a bit of discussion and an extensive review of the various options available to us, Doug and I have settled on Rusty's Surf Ranch on the Santa Monica Pier as our venue. It's centrally located; Doug's never been to the Pier before; and I really liked the fact that they state on the menu how many ways they'll split a check at your table. (For the record: four.)

We're planning to be there around 6:30pm - late enough for the locals to at least have a fighting chance at getting there, without getting slammed with dinner rush. (I hope.) If anything slows us down en route, I'll be certain to post updates on Twitter and/or FB, so keep an eye out there for further developments.

I'd love to have a vague idea of how many people to tell the restaurant to prepare for, so drop me a line or leave a comment here if you think you can make it.
kshandra: the highly stylized sphinx logo of the convention's inaugural year (Convolution)
...unlike my husband, I will be in attendance at Convolution this weekend. I don't know how much of the con I'll be at, as finances have dictated that I must commute up to the hotel from the Mysterious South; should anyone be in a position to offer, I will try and have a bag packed in the car, and will not say no to crash space.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how the con has come together.
kshandra: Mock Scrabble board square reading "Triple Nerd Score" (Triple Nerd Score)
I appear to be in possession of a 4-day BayCon guest-of-guest membership. I'm working Friday and Monday, and I'm not staying on-site (obviously), but I'll do my best to make the most of the time I'm there.

Tomorrow, I'll stop by ProgOps after work (hopefully they'll be open) to pick up my badge and see if I can learn who my mysterious benefactor is. (I have a couple of theories, but as [livejournal.com profile] karlht suggested I may be "pleasantly surprised," said theories could turn out to have very little basis in fact.)
kshandra: Hufflepuff House's coat of arms from the Harry Potter films. (Hufflepuff)
...several games, in fact.

Pottermore started letting in the public earlier this week, and I succumbed fairly early, despite my sour-grapes reaction after missing the beta. And after a decade of sorting 80/20 GryffinClaw (including the original Warner Brothers site for the films), I was determined to be a honey badger Hufflepuff. ;-) And I was just charmed with the description of the Hufflepuff common room on the site:

A sloping, earthy passage...travels upwards a little way until a cosy, round, low-ceilinged room is revealed, reminiscent of a badger's set. The room is decorated in the cheerful, bee-like colours of yellow and black, emphasised by the use of highly polished, honey-coloured wood for the tables and the round doors which lead to the boys' and girls' dormitories (furnished with comfortable wooden bedsteads, all covered in patchwork quilts).

Round doors, eh? We're not Hufflepuffs - we're hobbits.

I'm HollySeeker27011 in-game; please chime in with your game handle here, so I can set nicknames for you on the site. (I'm missing a nick for one person I added during my original frenzy on Tuesday, so even if I've already added you, let me know who you are, please!)

Back in December, [personal profile] murphymom gave [personal profile] gridlore and me gift memberships - "miracles" - for the Grateful Dead Game MMO, which went live (natch) on 4/20. We were actually looking forward to this...but Mom, I'm sorry you spent your money on it. :-/ The artwork is delightful, but the game is disappointing so far. There are four levels of a Donkey Kong-esque side-scroller to get through...and apparently none of the content we were promised (the "Space Rail" that is supposed to take us from concert venue to concert venue, interaction with other players, etc.) is ready yet. So you fall off the end of the platform (since the door to the next level won't open) - and the game resets to the beginning of Level 1. Indeed, the game resets any time you log off the site, or the Flash plug-in that runs the game crashes. The feedback that is showing up on the game's FB page and on the main site is brutal.
kshandra: Six hearts in rainbow colors, linked in a star pattern around an infinity symbol (Polyamory)
[personal profile] digitalsidhe posted earlier this evening about attending the memorial for Jack Random yesterday, and it appears to have stirred up a lot of emotions in me. Not because I knew Jack - indeed, I'm not sure I'd ever heard his name before my queer friends started posting about his passing.

And that's what did it. I'm upset about my complete inactivity in "freak" circles. Queer, kinky, poly...you name it, I'm a cipher in it. And it isn't about the sex (mostly, anyway, though I'd be lying if I said that part didn't bother me, too) - it's about the connection. The community (and half of my Burner friends are shouting "DRINK!" now). Yes, I have my Invisible Internet Friends, and I love you all, but I don't have anyone who will call me up and say "Hey, wanna go to $EVENT next week/month/whenever?"

I know, I know. If I did, 90% of the time the answer would would be "Sorry, can't afford it." But I'd like the opportunity to be disappointed that I won't get to do something, as opposed to being disappointed that I didn't even know the something existed until someone Tweets about it from the audience (which happened over the weekend).

And no, the answer isn't "So go do something on your own!" Especially not right now, when the introversion is spiraling into tighter and tighter circles.

All comments screened, and I make no guarantees that I'll be able to answer them in a timely fashion, if at all. Also, virtual hugs are going to rub me the wrong way - a symptom of the problem, if you will - so please, don't.
kshandra: knit toddler pants with a monster face over the bottom (CrankyPants)
I just deleted my Google+ profile. I wasn't using it (I can't keep up with the social networks I was already on), and I'm still squicked by the whole real-names issue.

...if I were to suddenly appear at Wondercon this weekend, might one of you wonderful people take pity on me and let me crash on your floor Saturday night?

I have friends who will be in the Masquerade, and after last year, the notion of going to a convention where I have NO emotional ties to the event or its staff is really appealing.
kshandra: Rich Uncle Pennybags, pockets turned out and palms upturned, over a background of Monopoly money (Broke)
[livejournal.com profile] gridlore just sent me a text message; they've ordered another round of Lovenox for him that I have to pick up at the pharmacy after work, along with the Xanax his PCP ordered instead of the Fukitol Lorazepam.

I THINK I have enough money in the bank to cover both scripts.

If you see me at Pantheacon tomorrow, buy me lunch and/or dinner? (Or a badge, so I can get into the Dealers Room and at least look at the pretty?) I'll have to come home by 8 so I can give Doug his evening shot, but if there's something appealing on the program I might come back.

Pewter Lining Department: When I got home from work yesterday, there was an envelope from Kaiser, with a copy of all of the paperwork his rep in the Medical Secretary's Office had faxed up to EDD to get his disability claim moving again. So there's at least hope that we'll get money eventually.

...not André (and not Andrae, either, though there is a Red Lobster around the corner...), but Buggy!

As some of you already know, [livejournal.com profile] eleri is coming down to the SF Bay Area for a seminar next month, and she'd love to see as many of you as possible while she's here. So we've made plans for a get-together, and hope you can make it.

When: Thursday, May 14th, 6-9pm
Where: Fresh Choice, 5353 Almaden Expy #39A, San Jose, CA 95118 - (408) 723-7991
Who: [livejournal.com profile] eleri. [livejournal.com profile] kshandra. [livejournal.com profile] gridlore, assuming he hasn't fallen asleep already. You. And you. And yes, you, even though you've never met her before.
Why: Because Everyone Loves Eleri. It's not just a good idea...it's the law.

I'm going to the 11:35 showing of Fanboys at the AMC Mercado 20 tomorrow morning. I'm about to be offline for the rest of the evening (I'm a dutiful daughter who's loaning [livejournal.com profile] murphymom her laptop power cord for a class o.O), so I can't do anything towards coordinating this. Text or Twitter DM me if you think you can make it.

...but before I go, I'm going to see Bill Kirchen at the Freight and Salvage on the 29th. Who's with me?

Now that I have the laptop, I don't have to worry about bringing paper and a pen to log what I sing.

I'm sure you're all thrilled. )

Wound up spending all day with [livejournal.com profile] supersniffles and [livejournal.com profile] firestrike; we had a BayCon staff meeting in the morning (and lasting much too long for someone who was awakened by chainsaws and leaf blowers), and were going to the bar in the evening, so it just made more sense to adjourn to the House of Pink in the interim. Someone played a Sleep card on Firestrike and me (snuggly person + flannel sheets = *snore*), so we didn't get out of the house quite as early as we intended, and as such I only got to sing twice. But I made it count. )
I must say, though, having a bartender who loves you is a mixed blessing; I only had one drink while I was there, but it was strong enough that I couldn't finish it, and BOY am I aware of my skull this morning. ;-)
kshandra: Animated: Kermit the frog in front of a red velvet curtain, flailing happily (Yaaaaaaaaaay!)
[livejournal.com profile] gridlore just informed me that nothing appeared to be happening on NYE that suited his mood, and I was free to make my own plans. YAY!

So, I'll be ringing in the new at KoC with [livejournal.com profile] kor27 (and $DEITY knows who else, as there's a party at the Hamptons that evening, and I suspect most of the regulars will be there). The show usually starts by 9, sooner if there are enough singers in the bar. Hope to see you there!

So I went to the bar with every intention of closing the place down; a sinus headache (exacerbated by a poorly-thought-out spate of headbanging during [livejournal.com profile] jeffercine's rendition of "Sad But True" and sadly not helped by a lovely scalp massage from [livejournal.com profile] kor27) put the kibosh on that, and I left around midnight. However, it was still slow enough at the beginning of the evening that I got a considerable amount of singing in.

See? )

(I'm sorry, I couldn't help myself on that title....)

I really need to get back in the habit of transcribing my karaoke lists the next morning, because otherwise they start stacking up like this:

Thursday, November 22nd )

Sunday, December 2nd )

Monday, December 3rd - Adults Only )

As those of you who read [livejournal.com profile] kor27 already know, he and I spent Friday evening at Sherwood Inn for karaoke. In taking notes for that show, however, I was reminded that I'd never posted about the previous time I was there, so this post needs to start with....
