The weather has been warmish here, though it got colder today. Yesterday it rained a bit. Seen at the birdfeeders this week: a large flock of sparrows, several starlings, a pair of house finches courting plus an extra male, two male cardinals, a mourning dove, and a fox squirrel. I saw a downy woodpecker in the trees. Red-winged blackbirds have been singing overhead. Honeybees are out, and finally found the flowers. Currently blooming: crocuses, snowdrops.

exhilarate

Mar. 2nd, 2026 12:00 am
[syndicated profile] merriamwebster_feed

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for March 2, 2026 is:

exhilarate • \ig-ZIL-uh-rayt\  • verb

Exhilarate means "to cause (someone) to feel very happy and excited." It is usually used in the passive voice as (be) exhilarated.

// She was exhilarated by the prospect of attending her dream school.

See the entry >

Examples:

"I'll say it: winter is my favorite season for jazz in Chicago. Summer may be busier and splashier, but there's nothing quite like nestling into a darkened club, cheeks flushed from the cold, for a singular and inventive night of music. It does more than thaw frozen fingers: It exhilarates, inspires and inflames, in the best way." — Hannah Edgar, The Chicago Tribune, 11 Jan. 2026

Did you know?

Many people find exhilarate a difficult word to spell. It's easy to forget that silent "h" in there, and is it an "er" or "ar" after the "l"? It may be easier to remember the spelling if you know that exhilarate ultimately comes from the Latin adjective hilarus, meaning "cheerful." (This also explains why the earliest meaning of exhilarate is "to make cheerful.") Exhilarate comes from exhilaratus, a form of exhilarare, which combines ex- and hilarare, a verb from hilarus that means "to cheer or gladden." If hilarus looks familiar, that may be because it's also the source of hilarious and hilarity (as well as hilariously and hilariousness, of course).

Donating clothes to charity has an unfortunate dark side

Here’s what actually happens when you donate clothes. First, they go to charity shops and collectors who sort through everything. The nicest pieces might be sold at the local thrift store.

But there’s a catch: these organizations receive far more clothing than they can sell. We’re talking about mountains of fabric that no one locally wants to buy.

So what happens to the rest? Some items are thrown away. But a huge portion gets packed into bales and shipped overseas.

There are lots of ways to address this issue. First, understand the problem...

Last week: Discussion on how Herod stacked up against various Roman emperors in terms of body count of his nearest and dearest; how Friedrich Wilhelm might hear the Josephus text; Herod throwing money around; Cleopatra!

This week: ...uhhhh there was a lot going on and I haven't actually finished the reading yet *ducks* -- I am doing that right now and I should most likely be able to comment tomorrow. (I don't anticipate this being a problem again for at least two more months, and most likely not then either; this was a confluence of various time sinks that doesn't usually happen all at the same time.) But I wanted to go ahead and get the post up because I know you guys have read it...

Next week: finishing up Book 2!

The Utility Closet Project

Today, we (mostly Gretchen and the kids, but I helped) set out on the project to clean out the utility closet in the hallway. This was long overdue, because things had reached the point where you couldn't find anything among the junk.

I had suggested to Gretchen last week that the situation would be greatly improved by getting a second shelf unit to go on the opposite end of the closet from the first one. She agreed and ordered one from Amazon that showed up late last week. My big contribution to the problem was assembling the shelf. Happily, this one was of a better design than the last shelf that I purchased for the garage and it went together quite easily -- with a bit of help from our big rubber mallet. I also moved the wall-mounted broom rack to a new location, since the old location was going to be behind the new shelf.

An incredible pile of junk came out of the closet. Some of it went into a trash bag, some into a box to go to Goodwill (we no longer have the vacuum cleaner that uses those bags), and a lot of it went back into the closet, but in a better state of organization. There are now *three* different containers of spackle in the closet, one of which started there, and two of which had lived on the bookshelves in the living room for way too long.

After we finished reassembling the closet, Gretchen joined me in the library and we sorted out the remaining mess from the post-Christmas visit, getting sheets back into the cedar chest and folding up quilts. There is still *plenty* of work to do in the library, but I have done a bit of facilitating work by cleaning up everything around the treadmill, which is *supposed* to depart to a new home tomorrow. It's amazing what got stuffed in that corner, including some Halloween candy of indeterminate age which went into the trash, and then the trash went into the barrel outside before Calvin the Very Hungry Dog could find the chocolate.

Because another trip to the emergency vet would be *just* what we needed...

We’ve been in New Orleans for a few days, enjoying warm weather and eating outdoors— cattitude in particular needed to get away from winter. Not as much interesting food as we’d hoped, but lunch today was at a lebanese restaurant, where we tried Lebanese iced tea, made with rosewater— the server apologized because she thought we had asked for it instead of ordinary sweet tea. My grilled shrimp and rice were also excellent.

Then we wandered through the French Market, and bought hats, a shoulder bag, and a smaller cros-body bag.

We rounded the afternoon off by listening to the drum circle in Congo Square, which has been weekly for more than 300 years. My brother suggested than because our hotel is across thethe street street from the park.

More when I get home ; we’re flying back tomorrow

The March Meta Matters challenge is now active over on [community profile] marchmetamatterschallenge. See the first check-in post here for introductions. Read the FAQ list, as there may have been some changes from previous years. See my entries from 2023, 2024, and 2025. Here are my How To list and my Meta list from 2024.

This challenge involves locating and copying over meta you've created to a second site in order to ensure its preservation. The fest recommends SquidgeWorld. There will be some prompts for creating new meta. Participants can post their goals for saving old meta and/or creating new meta. You can also collect, recommend, and save meta created by other people if it's not something you make yourself or yours is already up to date and saved.

Some canon-specific or author-specific websites have a section especially for meta about their fandom(s) to help new fans learn the canon(s), explore fandom in general, and to inspire fanworks. In particular, it used to be common for people to make fanifestos about a canon, its ships, major fanworks, etc. as guides to newcomers in hopes of growing the fandom; reviving this custom would be very helpful. Here on Dreamwidth, check out [community profile] shipmanifestos. Another great type of meta is reviews; see communities such as [community profile] books and [community profile] book_love for those. If you know of more such resources, March is a good time to post about them so more folks can find them and make sure that meta is backed up.

An increasing issue of archiving is the decline of archival websites. Ghost barely works anymore. The Archive.fo cluster is iffy at best, and when one of its sites glitches, you can't even use your old links anymore. That was the site that used to have the best ability to archive almost anything, except PDF files. Wayback, formerly the most reliable, and the only one I found that would safe PDFs, has become increasingly slow and prone to outages. It never saved quite as wide a range as Archive.fo but now saves a lot less. It's maddening. Because every page that can't be archived is work that will be wasted when linkrot eventually kills the original.

On the bright side, Dreamwidth remains a great place to crosspost your content from other platforms as a form of archiving by duplication. This is increasingly a good idea at a time when many platforms are collapsing due to misbehavior, locking everything to members only, or disappearing altogether. [community profile] goals_on_dw has a post for Full Content on Dreamwidth if this is your approach to sharing and archiving your work.

It might've been the last snow of the season this morning. A light dusting, enough to make me think a coat would've been nice and not too much to make me need more than a sweatshirt. It was nice to feel the last bits of cold, especially since the sun was out a couple of hours later, so nothing much stuck around. Few people were at the market, which made it easier - I haven't been to the Sunday one in a while, and as anemic as this time of year is for produce, it's nice to see some depth of color when it comes to the root vegetables.

In other shopping news, from working in assorted doctor's offices, I found a good quality bandage brand, and online shopping being what it is, I had to resort to eBay for a couple boxes. Most medical supply places call for a minimum order of significantly more than a couple boxes of bandaids, which I understand, and convenience pushes me towards eBay because that's all I need right now. It was that or Amazon, and I'm slightly more trusting of eBay as a general institution.

Periodic Sunday Book summaries--#4

Mar. 1st, 2026 06:14 pm
jreynoldsward: (Default)
[personal profile] jreynoldsward

Sunday book summaries are my casual log of what I’ve been reading this week. These are not formal reviews. They’re more my reactions and musings as taken from my journal when I complete the reading, and at times will contain notes about how they influence my thoughts on what I’m writing.

This one has a couple of weeks’ worth of reading, so again…”periodic.”

Here we go again. Part of March once again looks like it is going to be hectic, so…I may be writing these summaries every couple of weeks or so. Nonetheless, reading is happening.

Starting off with a book I forgot to add to my notes—Megan Kate Nelson’s Saving Yellowstone. While it had some interesting pieces to it about Yellowstone’s history, parts of that history have come close enough to research I’ve done for a book that I spotted areas where things either got glossed over or not discussed. Unfortunate. I suppose that reflects the reality that much of this history isn’t new to me because I’ve been to Yellowstone and read some of its history. I much preferred her The Three-Cornered War, probably in part because it isn’t an area where I’ve done a bit of reading.

The other nonfiction I’ve read recently is Hetta Howes’s Poet, Mystic, Widow, Wife. I—somewhat liked this book comparing the lives of four medieval woman—Marie de France, Julian of Norwich, Christine de Pizan, and Margery Kempe. The history and background of what each woman’s everyday life would have looked like is excellent. However. Then Howes tried to sum it up and make this history relevant to modern feminism and…that did not work so well. I’m still not sure why.

I’m off right now on an author reading binge, spurred by a Libby notice about a new book featuring Alexander McCall Smith (No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series). As it turns out, Smith wrote a prologue for D. E. Stevenson’s loosely-woven trilogy set in England and Scotland, originally published after World War II and referring to issues from that era. After reading Vittoria Cottage, I was sufficiently enthralled to read the other two books, Music in the Hills and Winter and Rough Weather.

These books are—well, in this era I guess one would call them a cozy read. They’re kinda sorta romance, in that relationships happen during the course of the books, but they aren’t Romance in the typical plot. Additionally, there’s a wee bit too much coincidence involving some secondary characters and their connections. But they’re a pleasant read. Smith sums up Stevenson’s work as “easy, in the sense that they are clearly written, tell an intelligible tale, and do not seek to impress the reader.”

I’d concur with that assessment.

But they’re a nice comfort read right now. Stevenson—Dorothy Emily Stevenson—was related to Robert Louis Stevenson and wrote a book a year for many years. These three books can be read as standalones, but there’s a clear progress. Vittoria Cottage chronicles the life of a new widow of a rather challenging man—not physically abusive but definitely psychologically abusive, and who busily kept isolating those he loved from others. Music in the Hills and Winter and Rough Weather chronicle their son’s exploration of possibly becoming the heir to a relative’s large farm, as well as his romantic endeavors, culminating in his marriage to the love of his life and their early times together. But other romances happen in these last two books which—to some degree adds up with the coincidence overload. A lost family then found, and the uniting of two couples who care for each other but kept finding obstacles to being together are just rather too tightly twined together, depending on the aftereffects of the bombing of Glasgow during World War II. On the other hand, even though I saw these events coming from a long way off, I still didn’t mind being able to figure out the connections.

However, one piece of characterization I really, really liked was that of Mamie Johnstone. Mamie considers herself to be dull, boring, and not as smart as her sisters. But as the stories progress, we see that Mamie is an excellent observer of behavior and draws reasonably accurate conclusions about what she sees. I loved this study of the interior life of a quiet, retiring woman who is smarter than she gives herself credit for being. Stevenson pulled off a portrayal that works for me, and it’s the sort of character that can be quite difficult to do well, without falling into cliché.

So I’m moving on to other Stevenson books, and have Listening Valley up next.

When I was sorting and reshelving books a couple of weeks ago, I found one of my favorite Terry Pratchett Discworld books, Men at Arms. It’s an excellent book overall, but one of the things that make it stand out (not just the famous boot discussion from Vimes) is the deconstruction of the Chosen One trope. Captain Carrot is a descendant of the kings of Ankh-Morpork…and he’s not at all interested in stepping up to that role. Some might say that Carrot doesn’t know about his ancestry, but I definitely think he does.

This is also the book where we start seeing other species appearing in the Night Watch, including one of my favorites, Angua, the werewolf. Always a nice read.

Years ago, I had an obsession with the Inklings and tried to branch out from Tolkien and Lewis to read Charles Williams. I read most of Williams’s work, and found parts of it confusing. Well, I revisited The Greater Trumps, and…I’m just not into that sort of mystical stream-of-consciousness work anymore, if in fact I really was into it in the first place. It went on the “discard” pile. I still have a couple other Williams books, so I might give them a try once more.

Because I’m contemplating working on a multiverse/time travel book, I picked up Fritz Leiber’s The Big Time. Weeell, the Suck Fairy didn’t hit this one too badly, all things considered, but…there were several threads that could have been used to expand the story a bit. Stereotypical characters, and I can’t help but think that a later short story set in the Spiders vs Snakes time war was much better, overall. Now I’ve gotta go dig that one out of the collection. In any case, this book is very much a product of its era.

That’s pretty much it. Besides the Stevenson, I am reading Stephanie Burgis’s Enchanting the Fae Queen. We’ll see how that one goes.

If you like what you’ve read, please feel free to check out my books on my website at https://www.joycereynolds-ward.com or drop a tip at my Ko-fi: https://ko-fi.com/joycereynoldsward

So this past weekend was my third Citruscon, everyone else's fourth. Told y'all last year why I missed the 2025 edition, but now I'm caught up. or so to speak. Here's the roundup.

[PANELS]

I wasn't able to do as many panels for Friday and Saturday because I had Second Job at some of the more peak times. But I was able to make it to a few ones. Friday I saw ones talking about Gengoroh Tagame's body of work, as well as non-fanthology zine culture and how one can go about translating it to BL fandom. Saturday I saw panels on himbos throughout the years, Japanese BL terminology and the specific tags people use to describe tropes/archetypes/etc., yuri manga recs for people who mainly read yaoi (although i was late for that one because Second Job), and one on fanfic etiquette that took a bit of a wild turn into the time one of the panelists got heat from the guinea pig enthusiast community of all things. I also got to do a mini-doujin workshop, which I'll post the end product of later on once I've got it uploaded to Squidge.

Sunday I caught the rest of the JP BL terminology panel on a rebroadcast since I missed the latter half, and then saw a rarepair panel that was probably one of my favorites of the con! A bunch of people were able to submit little videos spreading their rarepair propaganda, and I was sold on at least two of them (ChiboDomon from G Gundam, DonLepo from Don Giovanni -- yes, the opera by Mozart). Also enjoyed the cybersecurity panel and the round of Press Your luck that i didn't sit in on, but did draw a lil bit of quick n dirty yaoiz for (to be posted later). And then I found my second favorite panel of the con, which is a presentation on "Comfort Character Letters" which basically means that people will write to you in character and send you the copy. I feel like that would be a banger exchange idea...

[MEETUPS]

Was a LOT quieter on the meetup front this year because my interests skewed more niche this time rather than having popular interests in 2024. Balanced my time between the Vocaloid meetup, western animation meetup, the post-panel discussion for the doujin making workshop, tempural/Scumsuck's artist alley booth, and the rarepair panel post-discussion. Pretty relaxing, honestly, since these chats were a lil quieter than some of the other meetups that were going on. Special shoutout to those who watched the unabridged version of the fanifesto I was gonna send in but went way over time on after I linked it in that chat. You are the true MVPs ^^

[RECS]

A little less dense than last time because of the combo of Second Job and not being as active in chats, but I still got a tiny list ~~

MANGA/MANHWA/COMICS:
House of Brutes
Yoru to Asa
On A Leash (wlw)
Best Served Cold (wlw)

ANIME:
Mobile Fighter G Gundam (gen)

GAMES/VN:
Hashihime of the Old Book Town

OPERA (yes. thank you rarepair panel):
Don Giovanni (gen)

[ARTIST ALLEY]

Was a lil more focused on commissions this year as opposed to physical merch, even though one of the things I ordered ended up being a combo of both. Once I get the stuff, you'll see it in a separate post. But for now, special shout out to [personal profile] meganehaven , [personal profile] tempural , [personal profile] marinehaddock (even though he wasn't promoing his stuff as part of Artist Alley this year), and pepperonccini.com for providing me with The Good Shit.

More to follow once I sort out image hosting. Thanks again to the organizers! Shit was pretty good, even though idk how it's gonna go down next year what with Discord going down the sewer...
